What Will We Learn at School Today?

The video ends, and Anwar Suwan slips his cellphone back into his pocket. The marks on Ibrahim’s forehead, the bruised eye—did his captors beat him? “Of course we beat him!” the militia commander exclaims. “Do you know who Ahmed Ibrahim really was? A close relative of Gaddafi—killed people arbitrarily, threw them into prison holes where they would never see the sun again.” He makes a gesture of contempt. “We put him in a cage in the prison yard,” he says, smiling. “Whenever anybody enters, he has to bark.” Suwan laughs. “We beat them all, don’t worry. And we beat Ahmed Ibrahim extra hard. We need to know where he stashed away his money.”

This school in Misrata shows little evidence of the devastation that has made it the most war-wrecked city in Libya, but the country’s psychic scars are everywhere., Davide Monteleone / VII for Newsweek

“Our goal is change from the inside out,” says the seminar leader. She’s dressed in skinny jeans, sequined ballerina flats, and a light-colored hijab—no makeup. Women her mother’s age sit in a semicircle around her. “We need to remove everything negative left over from the last regime,” she says, and begins writing a list of class rules on the blackboard: “(1) Respect the new system. (2) Turn off cellphones. (3) Talk directly, not secretively.” She’s been sent here by the Tripoli City Council to help retrain the teachers at one of the city’s most venerable schools, Jalaa Elementary. Not far away is Martyrs’ Square, where the revolution hit the capital a year ago.

Much of what the instructor says may smack of self-help platitudes, but the women listen raptly. “First of all, one needs to know oneself,” she tells them. Schools in Gaddafi’s Libya were all about following instructions, never about thinking for yourself. Now the time has come to loosen the ropes. “If you disagree with anything, you have to speak up,” the instructor says. “Silence is participating in negativity.” She dashes back to the blackboard to write down the basis of democracy: “The right to disagree and solve conflict without fighting.” One by one, the women share their thoughts on the importance of free speech. “In other countries, they show everything on TV, the bad stuff too,” says one in a Gucci-inspired hijab. “We shouldn’t feel shame over such things.”

Another teacher speaks up. She wears a crocheted cellphone purse over her shoulder, in the new Libyan colors: red, black, and green. “This country was hostile to children,” she says. “Asking questions is a child’s nature. Questions were forbidden. Now both they and we have to start asking questions.” She pauses. “The wonderful thing is, for the first time in my life, I can sit in a group and speak my mind freely.” The instructor beams. “See? The course is already bearing fruit,” she says. “Remember! We have freedom now! Do not hesitate! To solve the problems, we need to talk our way through them!”

Amna Arebi, the teacher with the crocheted cellphone purse, was raised in Tripoli’s old quarter, a fisherman’s daughter. Walking home on Independence Street, she recalls how she rejoiced when Gaddafi overthrew Libya’s corrupt monarchy in 1969. Then the dictatorship took shape, and the happiness vanished. “I am bitter about what Gaddafi took,” she says. “I am soon 60 years old, and now I want as much of this freedom as possible.”

The winter sun casts a sharp light on the colonnaded sidewalks. Tripoli, a blend of Italian classicism and Arab street life, could have been—should have been—as pleasant as any little patch on Earth. “As a mother of seven and a teacher for 30 years, I know some things about children,” Arebi says. “We have to take care of them all, including children of Gaddafi’s supporters. They’re silent now, but they’re there.” But what has become of the teachers who supported him? “Some stay at home. Others just keep quiet. They have to be permitted to repent. But what a relief to no longer teach Gaddafi’s Green Book! My holy book is the Quran. Now that book will finally take the lead.”

A man’s legs protrude from beneath a desk in the principal’s office at the Sayyida Zeinab secondary school. They belong to the acting vice principal. He’s repairing a wall outlet, but he quickly gets up and welcomes the visitor. Tripoli’s Abu Salim neighborhood, where the school stands, is far from the gentility of Jalaa Elementary, Martyrs’ Square, and Independence Street. The roads are potholed, and trash is everywhere. Gaddafi’s largest prison stands here, now empty. No common criminals were sent there; it held only political prisoners, thousands of whom were massacred under the dictatorship. The neighborhood is where the dictator’s supporters made their last stand in the capital last August.

The school’s broken windowpanes and bullet-scarred walls testify to the battle to root out the snipers who were holed up inside. The former principal, a local Gaddafi stalwart, doesn’t dare return. A mathematics teacher is filling in for him; the acting vice principal and ad hoc handyman is a science teacher. “This is a ghetto, you know. Like in America,” says physics teacher Karima bint Hamid, dressed in a black jalabaya and a pale blue hijab. “And this is a ghetto school.” Faculty members say they’ve never heard of the city council’s retraining program. “I would love to hear about new teaching methods and become a better teacher,” says Khalifa Abdalah, who teaches Arabic. “We’re starving for something new.”

The government is hurrying to create new, less ideologically slanted textbooks and to retrain teachers at some schools so they will encourage pupils to think., Davide Monteleone / VII for Newsweek

The teachers reminisce about Gaddafi’s loopy education policies. English was abolished in the ’80s, to be replaced by the sub-Saharan African languages Swahili and Hausa. One year, agriculture was decreed to be the most important subject, and the president of the university was replaced by an agronomy student. “We were like pieces on a chessboard,” says another teacher. “That’s putting it nicely,” Karima interrupts. “Lab rats is more like it.”

Outside one of the entrances at Libya’s Ministry of Education, there’s a rug where you can wipe the dirt from your shoes. It used to be displayed reverently on a wall: a portrait of Gaddafi in a white officer’s uniform. Now it lies on the pavement, grimy and stained. Inside, discarded Gaddafi-era schoolbooks are stacked precariously in old cardboard boxes, like rotten fruit. Abdulnabi Abughania, a heavy-set man with a luxuriant moustache and dense, swept-back hair, works here as director of the ministry’s Department of Curriculum. “Everything needs to be rewritten,” he says. He asks a secretary to bring some of the new history texts. “They’re small pamphlets,” he says. “We don’t have time to produce real books before school starts. Gaddafi wanted history to start with himself, so older history was completely neglected. The kingdom before 1969 was completely erased from the text books. Ahmed Ibrahim, the minister of education, rewrote everything.”

The geography texts will have to be redone, too. Gaddafi insisted that the Arab world was borderless, so the maps rarely showed national boundaries. “He changed the calendar so Libya had a system shared by no one. He wanted to destroy the Roman city of Leptis Magna and the Greek ruins because they were made by ‘intruders.’ Masterpieces several thousands of years old! A couple of years ago all the math textbooks for fifth grade were withdrawn. One exercise was about seven dwarves and one king. The word ‘king’ was unacceptable. There was only one ruler: Gaddafi himself.”

The secretary returns with an armload of old textbooks and a few of the substitute booklets. “Look at this,” says Abughania, opening a Gaddafi-era history for ninth graders. “‘Chapter One: Our enemies and how to attack their belief system.’ ‘Chapter Two: The Arabs resist a common enemy in their own land.’ ‘Chapter Three: The enemies of the Arab world wish to break it apart by creating artificial boundaries.’ Do you want me to continue? He degraded history. He turned it into ideology.”

He turns to one of the new texts. Modern Arab History—9th Grade covers the Ottoman Empire, the Italian colonial occupation of Libya after 1911, World War II, and the Arab independence movement, including the birth of modern Libya in 1951. But anything after 1969—those 42 years under Gaddafi—is missing. “This is not the time to write that history,” Abughania says.

Suwan is relaxing in his barracks at a base outside Misrata, the most war-wrecked city in Libya. Even before the revolution, the militia commander was one of Misrata’s most powerful businessmen. He owns hotels in Jordan and has interests in Saudi Arabia. When Libyans rose up last year, he stepped in as one of the rebels’ main sponsors, and he made a point of being wherever the action was. He remembers his first visit to Ahmed Ibrahim’s jail cell. “I spat in his face,” he says, with satisfaction. After the capture of Gaddafi’s eldest son, Saif al-Islam, in November, Suwan flew to the southern city of Zintan to see him in person. “I spat on him, too. Twice. “This is from Misrata—and this is from me,” I said, and left. I was on his death list.”

It’s late. Suwan leads me to my car in the darkness. “What they did to us,” he says, and breaks off. “You cannot imagine.” A cold wind blows in off the sea. Suwan—the man who boasts of spitting on prisoners—is weeping. “My sister disappeared during the first wave of attacks, in March,” he says. “I’m still searching for her. Everything I do now, I do to avenge my sister.”

On the blackboard at Jalaa Elementary, the instructor finishes spelling out the rules: “(9) Be honest. (10) Be neutral.” She hands one of the teachers a sheet of paper marked with faces representing various emotions: happy, surprised, insecure, sad, angry, shocked. The task is to choose one. “Before I came, I was insecure. Now I feel better,” the woman says. “Choose from the list,” the instructor insists. The woman searches. “Confident,” she says. “I choose confident,” and she passes the paper to her neighbor. “Confident,” says the one in gray. “Confident,” says the one in blue. “Confident,” each one says. “Confident.” “Confident.” “Confident.”

Its repayment duration ranges from few months to 10 years, keeping your repayment ability in mind. Create private seating areas, a colored hammock to match your flowers, a wheelbarrow garden and much more. My notion is based around my assumption that few teachers have a soft spot respecting Home Improvement. What you need to do is look for a good and experienced general contractor in your area. At my house, every person has their own bath towel and they are responsible for hanging them up to dry after they shower. Then I added a peel and stick tile vinyl floor. This is because "standard" and "same" do not stimulate interest. Improving your home is hard work. What are your thoughts on home contractor? That is how to prevent being disquieted about someone wherever this is what this story is about. Do not rush in making your opinion on selecting the type of floorings. Most people are a bit more careful about where and how they spend their hard earned money. I am not new to these house remodeling terminologies. The problem occurs when two different people have two completely different ideas of what's getting ready to happen and haven't communicated to one another those differences. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. There is no real downside to the decision to declutter. My plan of action is sometimes not the only item this is making Home Improvement work.

ESCONDIDO: Family struggles after truck plows into home

1329901578 76 ESCONDIDO: Family struggles after truck plows into home

Lisa Vidaurri’s voice was still hoarse Tuesday, raw from so muchscreaming four days earlier when she watched the back wall of herhome explode.

Vidaurri saw glass showered over her teenage daughter, who satdoing homework at the dinner table about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Shesaw her husband pinned underneath the pickup that had plowedthrough the sliding glass door, and she listened to the pickupdriver revving the engine in a futile effort to drive away.

Police identified the driver as Brandon David Morris —- aTemecula man on probation for a previous drunken-driving conviction—- and arrested him at the scene on suspicion of drunken driving, violating the terms of his probation, and driving on a suspendedlicense. He remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of $403,000 bail. Itwas not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Morris —- who turned 23 the day before the crash —- was tobe arraigned Wednesday.

Vidaurri, 42, said she plans to be in the courtroom, but herhusband will still be in a hospital bed. Having been laid off froma good job last year and recently working as a handyman, he iswithout medical insurance.

She said her life and that of her family have been turned upsidedown since Morris’ truck crashed into their home on EveningsideGlen. Their backyard sits on Country Club Lane, at the bottom of adownhill curve.

Area residents, some of whom want the city to install stop signsalong Country Club Lane, have long cursed the stretch of road wherethe crash happened as dangerous. In 2003, a father and his14-year-old daughter died in a crash on July Fourth in 2003 just ablock or so west of site of Thursday’s crash.

On Tuesday, even after the overnight rain, tire tracks fromMorris’ truck remained visible in the mud and grass from the streetto the spot where a wooden fence once surrounded Vidaurri’s backpatio. The crash also took out power to the neighborhood thatnight.

Lisa Vidaurri said she was in the kitchen making dinner —-rice, carne asada and even sirloin steaks as a treat —- when thelights suddenly went out.

She turned to look out the window, she said, and saw what shebelieves were the tail lights of Morris’ truck as it shot past andonto the back patio where her husband was standing with thefamily’s two dogs, Coach and Juliette.

And then the truck plowed through the wall.

“It sounded like a bomb went off,” Lisa Vidaurri said. “I juststarted screaming. I was hysterical. My daughter was hysterical. But there was nothing I could do. I saw my husband face down in apool of his own blood.”

Neighbors poured from their homes to help. Viduarri said sheremembers one neighbor leaning down to talk to her husband, tryingto keep him calm while he remained pinned under the truck.

Daughter Laurel was showered in glass from the sliding glassdoor and suffered related injuries, but she was for the most partOK —-  the truck missing her by mere inches, Vidaurri said.

Son Blake, 18, was in the back of the home and uninjured.

Husband Tony Vidaurri, 44, remained at Palomar Medical Center onTuesday, undergoing facial reconstruction surgery, includingputting plates in his face. It was his second operation in fourdays.

Lisa Vidaurri said the crash “degloved” her husband’s skin, tearing it from nearly the entire left side of his face. He wasalso left with a lacerated spleen and many broken bones, includinghis ribs, she said. And he nearly lost a leg, she said, explainingthat a surgeon told her it was snapped nearly in two and filledwith mud.

Escondido police said Vidaurri was rushed to the hospitalThursday night in critical condition. He has since improved.

Palomar spokesman Leonel Sanchez said Tony Vidaurri was listedin good condition Tuesday.

Four days after the terrifying crash, the rain had washed awayher husband’s blood from the back patio. But debris —- snappedand splintered wood, the bumper and headlight from the truck amongthe mess —- was still scattered in the mud. Glass was stillspread throughout the living room where it had landed.

No one can live in the home until it is repaired, Vidaurri said.Wood covers the largest hole from the truck, but other holes in thewall remain. Debris covered the dining and living room floor, including pieces of a desk that exploded when the truck slammedinto it.

Vidaurri said that her children have moved in with their father, her ex-husband, for the time being. And she spends much of her timewith her husband.

She worries that her husband, who is a maintenance mechanic and”a blue-collar guy,” will be left permanently disabled.

The family is trying to set up a post office box for supportersto send donations. Supporters of the Viduarris set up a Facebookpage, which includes a PayPal account, for donations to help thefamily. To find it, search Facebook for “EscondidoDUI victim.”

New York: Muslims complain about “racial profiling” in wake of arrests in major jihad terror plot

1329891987 65 New York: Muslims complain about racial profiling in wake of arrests in major jihad terror plot

The word “Desis” – originally, from a Sanskrit word – is meant to refer to people from the subcontinent , India, Bangladesh, Pakistan – that were once part of a single unit, India,Bharat, Hindustan. The word is used to describe where people are from, or where a cuisine is from – say, “she’s a Desi girl” (i.e., born over there but now living here, in the West) or “real Desi cuisine” (as opposed to a version modified, as Chinese cuisine is modified, for Western tastes and clientele). Muslims, however, are not nearly as likely to use the word “Desi” as areHindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists (there are pockets of Buddhists who resisted the Muslims, as in the Chittagong Hills in what is now called Bangladesh); the adjective Muslims prefer is “Muslims.” Nonetheless, here is an organization calling itself “Desis Rising Up and Moving.” It purports, I presume, to be non-denominational, and rests on the unexamined, and phony, assumption or presumption that Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, and those who are Hindus-but-atheists (aAnd what does the rest of the title mean? “Rising Up”? Does that “rising” in the world, or does it mean “rising up” against the oppressive people who have generously allowed one to settle deep within their countries, and to whose country and people not hostility, or murderous hostility, but rather gratitude, for the chance, ought to be exhibited? What does “Rising Up and Moving” mean? Is “moving” akin to “Moving on up” in the world, like George Jefferson? Or does it mean something like “la movida” in Spain just after Franco, a kind of generalized ferment? What does that title mean?

Why would an organization that appears to be geographically based — “Desis” – in this case appear to be taking a great interest in how the New York Police Department, and other organs of security in this country, do or do not deal with a real Muslim threat – a threat that those Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian, Buddhist, and other “Desis” who are supposedly in that “Desis Rising Up and Moving” group – should know all about even better than do, as yet, most Americans who lack that thousand years of experience with Muslim invaders and conquerors. . Perhaps the real purpose of the organization “Desis Rising and Moving” has been to provide a kind of cover for what is in the main a group formed (if it really exists, and is not just two men and a letterhead) to promote Muslim interests, behind Hindu and Sikh and other unthreatening “Desis” who can be invoked to provide camouflage.

It would not be the first time that Muslims have done this.

Arab Muslims do this when they take advantage of the history of Lebanese Christians in this countyr, to take over or create organizations about “Arab-Americans” that are, in truth, about Muslim Arabs, whose interests are quite different from, are opposed to, those of the people whose ancestors were Maronites (or Greek Orthodox) from Lebanon and Syria, and who came to America, as to Canada and Australia, to flee the Muslims who, it was understood by the original Lebanese immigrants, were a threat to them and to their present and future wellbeing.

And still another technique used by Muslims is to deliberately mis-represent the hostility they feel, that they are taught to feel so deeply toward Christians and Jews (“Take not Christians and Jews as friends! For they are friends only with each other” is only one of many examples in the Qur’an), and carefully join groups identified as three-abrahamic-faith-healers, in order both to confuse and reassure the naive Jews and Christians who are ignorant of Islam and are eager to remain ignorant of Islam, and to turn all such organizations and groups into what the Muslims always intended them to be, groups to support Muslim interests, Muslim demands, groups to promote the interests of Islam.

Travis County looks at possible Norwood link in murder

1329884769 76 Travis County looks at possible Norwood link in murder

The Travis County district attorney’s office is discussing whether to review a 1985 murder case in connection with Mark Norwood, raising new questions about whether another innocent man could be in prison for a murder linked to the former handyman and carpet layer.

Dennis Davis, a former Austin recording studio owner, was convicted last year of murdering his ex-girlfriend Natalie Antonetti in 1985. But the manner in which Antonetti was murdered is eerily similar to the two killings with which Norwood has already been connected.

"That’s why the discussion needs to occur, based on the similarities," Buddy Meyer, a Travis County assistant district attorney, said Friday. Meyer said his office is discussing whether to review the Davis conviction and compare the evidence in the Antonetti murder to the other two murder cases.

Norwood, 57, was arrested in November and charged with the 1986 murder of Christine Morton in North Austin. His DNA, along with Christine Morton’s blood, was identified on a blue bandana found near the murder scene. Norwood’s DNA was also identified on a pubic hair found at the scene of the 1988 murder of Debra Masters Baker in Austin. He has not been charged in connection with her death but is considered a suspect.

All three women were beaten to death as they slept. The assailant entered their homes in the early morning hours, and all three were bludgeoned with a large, blunt wooden object. The three women were all attractive brunette mothers in their 30s. And each of the murders occurred on the 13th day of the month.

The women also lived in close proximity to Norwood, who worked as a handyman and carpet installer. Norwood lived about 12 miles from Morton, a few blocks from Baker and about nine miles away from Antonetti.

Meyer said the district attorney’s office would probably decide within a week or two whether to conduct a review of the Antonetti case.

Wade Russell, the lawyer for Dennis Davis, said he had hoped that developments in the Morton and Baker cases would prompt Travis County officials to review his client’s case.

"I hope there is some connection to Mr. Norwood," Russell said. "But I can’t tell you right now what that would be other than the M.O. being similar."

Davis was sentenced to 36 years in prison last year, following a 2006 tip to police from his then-estranged wife who said he told her that he had “sinned against God and man.” The case that Travis County prosecutors presented was based entirely on circumstantial evidence.

Davis’ wife later reconciled with him and refused to cooperate. But the woman whom Davis told police he was with the night of the murder told investigators that she did not have an entry in her journal noting that she was with him when the police called, and that it was something she would have recorded. Another ex-girlfriend told the jury that Davis had confessed to her years earlier but that she had been too afraid to come forward.

Russell said he knows of little physical evidence that might be available for DNA comparison. One item police might use for comparison, he said, is a pair of men’s size 32 underwear that was found near the pool at the apartment complex where Antonetti lived. Antonetti had gone for a walk by the pool on the night before she was murdered. DNA on the underwear was tested but did not match Davis or any other suspects.

The discovery of Norwood’s DNA last year on the bandana found near the Morton home led to the exoneration of Christine Morton’s husband, Michael Morton, who was convicted of her murder in 1987 and served 25 years of a life sentence.

Norwood’s lawyer, Russell Hunt Jr., of Georgetown, has said his client is not a murderer and that he has denied killing Morton or Baker. Hunt said Tuesday morning that he was unaware of the Antonetti case. Norwood appeared in court for the first time this month, and the next hearing in his case is scheduled for Feb. 22. He is being held in the Williamson County Jail, with bail set at $750,000.

Meanwhile, Morton’s lawyers are pursuing a court of inquiry to determine whether the prosecutor who sent him to prison a quarter-century ago committed criminal misconduct.

Morton’s lawyers have discovered that there was evidence back in 1987 when Michael Morton was tried that indicated someone else killed his wife. There was a transcript of a conversation between the lead investigator and Christine Morton’s mother in which she told the sergeant that the couple’s 3-year-old son, Eric, described the murderer to her: a "monster" with a big mustache who was not his father.

There were also reports from neighbors of a suspicious man in a green van seen several times getting out of the vehicle and walking into the woods behind the Mortons’ home. And there were reports that Christine Morton’s credit card had been used and a check with her forged signature had been cashed after her death.

Morton’s lawyers allege that then-prosecutor Ken Anderson — who is now a state district judge — knew about the evidence and deliberately withheld it from the trial judge and from Morton’s lawyers. They’ve asked Bexar County State District Judge Sid Harle to convene a court of inquiry to determine whether Anderson should face criminal charges for prosecutorial misconduct.

Anderson has denied any wrongdoing in the case and has objected to efforts to convene a court of inquiry, calling the allegations against him "unjustified and insupportable." Even if the claims were valid, Anderson has argued, the statute of limitations has expired.

Harle has scheduled a hearing on the court of inquiry matter for Feb. 10.

Latinos making comeback in employment

1329877567 78 Latinos making comeback in employment

WASHINGTON — After scraping by on handyman jobs for a year,Bert Qintana figured he’d have to leave his wife and teenage son attheir home near Taos, N.M., and find work elsewhere.

Then Qintana got a call last month from Chevron Mining, whichruns a mine 20 miles away. Would he be interested in hauling muckfrom the molybdenum mine for $17.05 an hour? He leaped at theoffer.

“Thank God,” said Qintana, 45, a Latino who had worked as ageneral contractor. “I was able to hang in there and not have tomove.” About a dozen other workers, most of them Latino, also werehired.

Like Qintana, many Latinos with ties to the home-buildingindustry got slammed by the recession, which wiped out about 2million construction jobs.

But now, as the economic rebound picks up a bit of steam,Latinos are scoring bigger job gains than most other demographicgroups and proving to be a bright spot in the fledglingrecovery.

While they make up only 15 percent of the country’s workforce,Latinos have racked up half the employment gains posted since theeconomy began adding jobs in early 2010, Labor Department datashowed.

The improving labor market for Latinos, a key voting bloc, couldboost President Barack Obama’s political fortunes in the fall. Theybacked Obama heavily in 2008, but many became disgruntled overrecession-induced job losses, a top concern among Latinos, and hishandling of immigration issues.

Among registered Latino voters, 54 percent approved of thepresident’s handling of his job as of late last year, down from 63percent a year earlier, according to Pew Hispanic Center surveys.Among Latinos ages 18 to 29, the president’s approval rating tookan even steeper fall.

A rosier jobs picture could turn that around.

So far, Latinos are the only demographic group whose employmentnumbers have returned to pre-recession levels. The latest Latinojobless rate of 10.5 percent remains higher than the overall rateof 8.3 percent for the nation and 7.4 percent for whites, partlyreflecting their large immigrant population (foreign-born U.S.workers tend to have higher unemployment because of a variety offactors) as well as education and skill levels.

The construction industry remains weak, but other sectors inwhich Latinos have a relatively large share of jobs — hotels, foodservices, health care and manufacturing, for example — are seeingmore robust job growth.

Mining support services, in which Latinos make up about a fifthof the workers, are expanding employment significantly. And,because Latinos account for a relatively small share of workers inthe public sector, they aren’t bearing the brunt of deep cuts ingovernment jobs.

There are other reasons, experts say, why Latinos are faringbetter than some other groups. For one thing, they might be morewilling to take low-wage, temporary jobs. And they tend to be moremobile, willing to move from one county to another to get ajob.

Some of the decline in Latino unemployment reflects the factthat many discouraged workers have stopped looking for jobs. Also, with jobs generally hard to find, fewer people are moving to theU.S. from Latin America, and more are returning home. The result isa smaller pool of workers who can more easily get employment.

As with other temporary workers, some Latinos may find thatshort-term jobs are a path to full-time work. But for many others,low-wage, temporary jobs don’t offer much opportunity foradvancement or for the kind of income needed to support afamily.

When the housing industry was booming, workers such as Qintanahad a better shot at building a middle-class life.

Qintana’s contracting firm couldn’t even keep up with the demandfor construction and repairs, enabling him to make enough money tobuild his own house in the foothills of the Sangre de CristoMountains.

At the start of the recession in late 2007, the Hispanicunemployment rate was 6.3 percent nationwide. As the economyworsened, the jobless rate for Hispanics topped 13 percent inNovember 2010. Since then, that rate has fallen to 10.5percent.

The declines, said Adriana Kugler, the Labor Department’s chiefeconomist, were “very striking” and cut across workers’ ages. Thatsuggested that the trend wasn’t occurring simply because Latinoshave a large percentage of younger workers.

(EDITORS: STORY CAN END HERE)

Obama administration officials see significant implications ifthe trend continues.

Latinos, the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, notonly are fueling population growth in California, Texas andFlorida, but also in Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio and other states. Astheir share increases, Latino voters could play a pivotal role inthe fall elections.

“My concern is they are going to stay home” and not vote, saidGustavo Torres, executive director of Casa de Maryland, a Latinoand minority advocacy group.

“They’re very disappointed with the president because of jobsand immigration reform,” Torres added, referring to Obama’sunfulfilled pledge to overhaul the nation’s immigration policy. Many Latinos also have sharply criticized the administration’shandling of deportations of undocumented immigrants.

But among registered Latino voters, the top issue is jobs, andthe outlook is brightening. Monthly updates from Casa de Maryland’sfive field offices, where people get training and help findingjobs, show a 20 percent to 30 percent increase in hiring in thelast year.

Although most are temporary jobs, Torres said, “they are feelingthings are moving in the right direction.”

Latinos have a bigger climb than others. According to Pew,household wealth of Latinos, on average, fell more sharply than forwhites or blacks from 2005 to 2009, and the ethnic group’s povertyrate from 2006 to 2010 increased more than for any other group.

Fred Moreno of Bell, Calif., who has an associate’s degree inscience and information technology, knows what it’s like to fallbelow the poverty line.

Laid off from a copier company in 2008, the 44-year-old Navyveteran exhausted his $200-a-week jobless benefits by the end of2010. He then drained his life savings, had his truck repossessedand ended up homeless, sleeping sometimes at a shelter by theairport.

“I don’t smoke, I don’t drink or do drugs,” he said. “I’mbilingual. I have two good legs, two good arms. But it’s nothappening.”

Then, a few months ago, after getting help with his resume fromAdrian Lazaro of the California Employment Development Department,Moreno landed a job as a technician with Xerox Corp. in ElSegundo.

He has since moved back into an apartment, married and bought a1995 Ford van. “I’m slowly and surely saving up again,” hesaid.

Khloe Kardashian and husband Lamar Odom broke a sex swing when they were trying it out for the first time. The 27-year-old socialite had decided to spice up her love life with her husband of two years by creating a "a sexual chamber of love" after her brother Rob moved out of the couple's home in Dallas, Texas. She said: "Our relationship is phenomenal. We're so in love with each other; he makes me feel so confident and sexy. "I don't see why there has to be an ending to the honeymoon phase, so I'm always trying to keep [our relationship] spicy and new. In my quest to have this passionate sex life with Lamar, I'm going to turn Rob's old bedroom into a sex chamber of love." So she visited a sex shop and bought a range of erotic items, including a swing, which she installed herself. However, when she and Lamar – who she married in September 2009 – tried it out, it fell from the ceiling. In scenes from their reality TV show 'Khloe & Lamar', she said: "I guess I didn't install it right. I'm not a handyman. I'm trying to push the limits and try something new." ©Bang Showbiz

My Backyard Classic: 1957 Chevrolet 210 Handyman Wagon – Now What?

1329847584 39 My Backyard Classic: 1957 Chevrolet 210 Handyman Wagon – Now What?

I was inspired to write this by two recent articles. One questioned what car we would buy from 1981 and keep for 30 or 60 years. The other was the Eco-Boost 1959 Edsel. Now I’ve had this car for about 38 years, so it answers the first question. But I’ve been neither attentive nor kind to it, so I’m going to hate myself if it dissolves in my yard. So a plan of action to get it back on the road for the next few decades is called for. And maybe you can help me with that.

I don’t want to drive something that averages 13-15 mpg and has a weekly appointment with a mechanic. Brakes, comfort systems, and fuel economy keep it from being a daily driver today. But I’m ready to start on making it more fit for the next thirty years. That involves mulling over a lot of possibilities, and making decisions. That’s the fun, part, right? And the easy part too. The actual doing will be a bit harder, and unfortunately, the internet hasn’t yet figured out how to transport muscle and sweat. So I guess I’ll have to muster my own.

Here’s a bit of background, and some options I’ve been considering. Then you can chime in. Maybe this can be CC’s own Project X if I don’t mess it up.

When I bought this car I was told it was a Bel-Air 210. That’s obviously not correct, since there’s no such thing. The Bel-Air was the luxury model for Chevy in 1957, and there was no Bel-Air two-door wagon, except of course:

the Nomad. The 210 was the model in the middle with the 150 being the bottom feeder. The 210 was also available with Bel-air trim that jazzed it up without making it a Bel-Air.  Obviously a Bel-Air dash here. Possibly original or someone could have added it later. But it’s not a genuine Bel-Air and the 150 had no Bel-Air trinkets.

There were less than 18,000 – 210 two-door Handyman wagons like this sold. In comparison there were over 240,000 Bel-Air four door sedans.  The 210 got its name by dropping one zero off the end of it’s production series (2100). The 210 model number was dropped after the ’57 and replaced by Biscayne.

The engine was set back from the front axle for better weight distribution and it makes for a large engine bay. This has led to a number of unique combinations over the years. You can fit a 6.2/6.6 GM diesel (one of my recurring thoughts) or a big block (which is not).

My involvement with this car came about while I was learning to speak Vietnamese at the Defense Language Institute in El Paso, Texas.  As you can imagine this school was not preparing us for long periods of shore duty in the United States. There had to be a perfect storm for me to buy this car:

1.  It really grabbed me;

2. I had a place to put it; and,

When I first saw this car it was colored beach sand with a white top. The owner painted it in his driveway and that paint is still mostly there today.

He decided that he just had to have a 56 Nomad that he found, so he swapped engines with my baby and sold her to a friend of mine. That friend came upon hard times (a frequent occurrence with sailors) and sold it to me for $500. I liked it and drove it home so my parents could use it while I was overseas.

My dad promptly ran it it into the side of a train and had to rebuild the front. He didn’t tell me until he had it fixed. I probably wouldn’t have bothered. They were still pretty cheap.  After spending several years in a garage in Kansas, I resurrected it.  I’ve always liked these headlights.  An early cold air inlet with the screen around the bulbs.

Dad’s rebuilt front end

Thanks to the auto shop teacher at my high school I was able to use it as a daily driver for several years.  As much fun as it was to drive, rising gas prices caused me to park it in 2007.  That’s one of the changes that has me looking at it again.  This past year I only put 2,000 miles on the truck I replaced it with. That’s not a lot of gas.

With a speedometer that normally works in the summer only, I needed a way to calculate speed. A measured mile and the tach gave me something that works.

The Powerglide can’t find park despite a rebuild. If you adjust it to find park, it can’t find reverse.  This transmission will probably run (inefficiently) for about a million years, but I think I can do better. I think just about any stick is better.

I have certainly thought about the 700r4 or 200r4, as I understand they are pretty simple swaps.  The 283 could stand some hardened valve seats or just swap to a set of 305 heads. A propane conversion kit would solve the (non)hardened valve seat problem and gain efficiency. That might be better and cheaper.

The car weighs 3600 pounds according to the title.  I don’t think a 235  has quite enough to move it down the road.  It probably would with a little help from clifford but I  don’t see that as an upgrade.  A 261 might be a good answer if you can find one.

More than once I’ve thought of the Nissan/Chrysler 6 cylinder diesel that came in the international scout. Also 6.2’s (with transmission) have become pretty cheap on ebay. They should be as easy to bolt in as a later model Chevy gas engine. I think the engine setback makes the 6.2‘s additional 100 pounds a moot point. It was made to bolt in where a big block will fit and there sure is plenty of room. Whatever goes in, disc brakes are going on. In today’s world although they are not legally required on this car,  seat belts (probably lap only) are essential.

I am a poster child for ADD so I move from one thought to another.  It will probably take getting in the middle of this project and finding something I think makes the best fit.  It’s also going to be inexpensive without being cheap.

The rust goes first. In fact it’s mostly gone now. A drill, a wire brush, some galvanizing spray and paint. Instructables recently had an article on painting your car at home.  I am leaning towards trying that. The body doesn’t need much and it ran well when parked.

I recently discovered how much rubber can deteriorate in four years. The rust on the door and floorboard on the drivers side was my first clue. Even though the car is unique, I don’t want a concours restoration. I just want to drive it for a long time.

I am not a mechanic and I am retired and don’t want to go back to work to afford this. I think Ebay is going to be my friend. I have always been impressed by the knowledge of the commentators on CC. I am curious about what you might think.

The donkeys, the car, and I will be right here waiting for your suggestions. And no, it’s not for sale.

The new and improved handyman

1329842770 82 The new and improved handyman

When it comes to getting things fixed, the lake area has come a long way. Many long-time residents can recall the early days of the lake when if something broke, homeowners often found themselves on a waiting list in Bedford, Rocky Mount or Roanoke while contractors tried to find room in their schedules to make the trip down back roads to fix a leaking toilet.

Things are different now; Smith Mountain Lake has its own handymen who do much more than fix leaking toilets. Thanks to the growth of the lake and an uncertain economy, today’s handymen don’t have to deal with smaller jobs such as changing light bulbs, although, they say, they’ll do that, too, if you need them to.

Mike Massie, owner of Husband For a Day Affordable Home Services, said he’s done everything from cleaning gutters to burying pets.

John Hunn, who opened John Hunn Home Maintenance & Renovation at the lake about 20 years ago, said many homeowners appreciate the diversity of work a handyman can offer. Instead of calling several contractors when something requires several tools or skillsets, homeowners can make one phone call and that one company often can get the job done.

Hunn said some of the smaller jobs he once was called out for have dried up as homeowners look to make budget cuts. In the past two years, he hasn’t gotten a single call for a stopped-up toilet or to change light bulbs in high places.

“They’ve learned how to do it,” said Hunn. “People have started taking care of the little things themselves and saving money.”

Homeowners also have been letting little problems build up until they have a laundry list of problems they need fixed, said Massie.

“The toilet is going to keep running for a while,” he said. “I’ve had husbands call me and say, ‘Get my wife off my back. I’ve got a list of things here and my wife has been on me for a year.’”

Phil Pignatella, owner of Phil’s Home Improvement, said he opened his business straight out of high school about eight years ago. The 20-something grew up helping his father in the home-construction business.

“I’ve tried other things and I didn’t like them,” said Pignatella. “I take a lot of joy in what we do.”

Lately, it’s been a lot of kitchen and bathroom remodeling jobs. He said with the economy the way it is, many homeowners have cut back on major spending and are looking for less costly ways to make improvements.

“It’s a little easier for someone to make a nice improvement for $3,000 than a full addition,” said Pignatella.

Pignatella said after about five years in the business, he has built up a base of repeat customers who will call a few years after the initial job when something else needs doing. Those repeat customers are important to the business, he said.

Hunn agreed. He said he still has his first customer from when he launched his business about 20 years ago and has about 300 additional ones who have provided him with repeat business over the years. He said he and his customers have formed friendships that extend beyond the business calls.

In fact, Hunn said his customers helped him land on his feet after he filed for bankruptcy in 2008. He had five spec houses when the housing market took a nosedive. Hunn lost those, plus his business. After he reopened his handyman business under a new name, his customers started calling.

“My customers actually created work to get me going,” said Hunn. “They’d call and say, ‘I’ve got this that you can do.’”

Hunn said he wasn’t the only one to go under. During the boom times in the mid-2000s, handymen were springing up everywhere, he said.

“We got to where there was an overabundance,” said Hunn.

When the economy went sour, some businesses folded. Others, he said, packed up and left.

“You could see the trucks pulling out of here with equipment on them one right after the other,” said Hunn.

He said seeing some of them leave the area was a blessing for the handymen who remain and to homeowners. During the boom times, fly-by-night contractors who were paid in full up front but never showed up to do the job were rampant, he said.

“I’ve done a couple jobs for free before because I’ve felt real bad for people,” said Pignatella. “It gives us a bad name.”

Massie, who came to the lake after the economic bubble burst about three years ago, said another hurdle handymen faced in recent years was the loss in real estate-related clients. He worked in Charlottesville for 10 years before moving to the lake and 90 percent of his clients were Realtors, said Massie.

“Every time they sold a home, somebody wanted to change it,” he said. “The real estate market went down and I went out of business almost overnight.”

Massie said it was a double-whammy, as his wife left him when his business went under. When he named his business at the lake Husband For a Day, Massie said he wanted to inject some humor into an otherwise painful situation.

Pignatella said he encourages everyone who is looking to hire a contractor of any kind to ensure the business is licensed and insured. He said it’s not required by law (he thinks it should be), but it makes businesses more accountable and can give homeowners some peace of mind. He said it’s important for homeowners to let the person hired know exactly what their expectations are.

Other advice from Pignatella: Get three price quotes, but don’t always take the lowest; find out exactly what the job entails and the plans for completing it; set deadlines; and ask about the latest materials and what kind of experience the contractors/handymen have with them.

  News From Terre Haute, Indiana

TERRE HAUTE — On a billboard hovering over a busy stretch of U.S. 41 south of Terre Haute, the gritty hands of an electrician look 30 feet wide. They belong to Norm Cheesman. The creative minds behind a Dinty Moore Beef Stew ad campaign found him, almost by accident, through a nationwide search for “good, hard-working men” whose hands would appear on billboards. Cheesman fit the criteria like a pair of work gloves. He spent 38 years connecting wires to put light and energy in other folks’ lives. But, as friend Tim Miller put it, “He’s much more than an electrician.” It didn’t take long for the crew at a Minneapolis commercial photography studio to discover that. As they arranged the billboard project for Dinty Moore, the staff of noted photographer Jim Gallop hunted for the right guys in seven small cities — Battle Creek and Flint in Michigan; Bowling Green and Lexington in Kentucky; Syracuse and Watertown in New York; and Terre Haute. Their callout led to Local 725 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on the city’s east side. An officer at the local originally agreed to make the all-expenses-paid trip to Minneapolis for the Dinty Moore photo shoot last November, but a scheduling conflict arose. “So he sent me,” Cheesman recalled, with a chuckle, “and here we are.”

The 61-year-old lifelong Terre Hautean was less than two months from retirement (on Dec. 30) when he flew from Indianapolis to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. He and six other hard-workers from those middle-class towns put their hands in front of the camera, and learned something in the process. “As a construction worker, you never really think about that stuff,” Cheesman said. “You go by billboards every day, but you never know what goes into putting one up.” The agency was dealing with some mystery, too, by using novices as ad models. The agency ran a background check on each guy, but had no idea how the workers would react in a studio setting. “It was kind of like searching for a needle in a haystack,” Julie Gallop, a studio staffer and sister-in-law of the photographer, said by telephone from Minneapolis. Cheesman was a pleasant surprise. “Just a really nice person,” Julie Gallop said, “and the agency just adored him.” To prepare for the shots, the studio coated Cheesman’s hands with grime — “fake dirt,” as he called it — and told him, “Whatever you do, don’t touch the can of Dinty Moore stew.” He followed instructions, and Jim Gallop “just clicked the pictures off like crazy.” The photo used on the billboard features Cheesman’s hands and two significant symbols of his life. His right hand holds a voltage tester, which was the only electrician’s prop the studio had available. (That model has since been updated and replaced, a quirk that Cheesman’s colleagues quickly noticed and ribbed him about.) His left hand bears the wedding ring his wife, Sherrie, gave him 42 years ago. In their early years, Norm completed his service in the Air Force and enrolled in the local electrician’s apprenticeship program. In the midst of that four-year training process, he began building their house. At the time, he could’ve used hands that were 30 feet wide, just as they look on that Dinty Moore billboard, which fittingly carries the slogan, “For those who do more.” “I was working all day, and going to school two nights a week, and working on the house the other five nights,” Cheesman remembered. “I bit off too much. I wouldn’t recommend that to anybody. I had my hands full.” Fortunately, he had help. His father-in-law was a union electrician, and his father a union sheetmetal worker. “If it hadn’t been for my dad and father-in-law, and Sherrie, and the family, it would’ve killed me,” Cheesman said. With their support, the house got finished in 18 months, and it’s been their home for more than 35 years. “It’s not a mansion, by any means,” Cheesman said, “but it’s warm and dry.” They raised two sons, and now have three granddaughters. Norm and Sherrie, members of Maryland Community Church, have used their skills on mission trips to Georgia (with Habitat for Humanity) and the Central American nation of Guatemala, where the Light and Life School in the rural village of Salquil offers children a bilingual Christian education in the Mayan Ixil and Spanish languages. Tim Miller, a fellow Maryland member and a Terre Haute heating and cooling contractor, joined Cheesman on two of those missions to the Guatemalan mountain community at the base of an inactive volcano. They worked on the school and performed a total makeover of a missionary’s house. Cheesman impressed Miller not only with his mastery of the electrician’s trade, but also through interactions with the Guatemalan kids. “Man, this dude has got the most gentle spirit I’ve ever seen,” Miller said. “He always leads with his heart,” Miller added, “and he makes sure things are right, there.” As for his own community, Cheesman represented it well in Minnesota. “He would be a good PR guy for your part of the country,” Julie Gallop said. The staff liked his “all-American, Midwest image,” she continued, as “somebody who represented small-town America, a hard-working guy.” Nearly four decades after he became an electrician following graduation at Honey Creek High School and his Air Force days, Cheesman still believes in his craft and supports vocational education in the schools. “I still think there’s great opportunity out there to make a living with your hands,” he said. “Being an electrician was a great career for me.” When asked if the ad work could lead to a second career, Cheesman sounded amused. But it’s not a stretch. The Minnesota agency’s interest in Cheesman didn’t end when his Dinty Moore billboards went up last month near Kroger South in Terre Haute and in eight other locations around Indianapolis. The agency’s art director showed Cheesman’s pictures to another client needing a product model — a sunflower seed company — “and the next thing I know, I’m going back to Minneapolis on a plane,” he said. That was two weeks ago. Cheesman isn’t sure what, if anything, will come of that experience. For now, he’s having fun with it. “From a construction worker to this — it’s been quite a journey,” he said. “I told Sherrie, the Lord provides, and sometimes in mysterious ways.” Mark Bennett can be reached at (812) 231-4377 or .
